GIT Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand

The Thai Gem and Jewelry Institute (Public Organization) is a government organization in the form of a public institution under the Public Organizations Act B.E. 2542 and was established in accordance with the Royal Decree on the Establishment of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Institute (Public Organization) B.E. 2546. Its establishment was published in the Royal Gazette on December 31, 2003. The Institute is under the supervision of the Minister of Commerce.

Background, Mission, Objectives, and Responsibilities

On September 1, 1998, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce (Mr. Sompol Kiatphaibool), the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry (Mr. Pricha Attavipach), the Director-General of the Ministry of Mineral Resources (Mr. Nopadon Mantajit), the Director-General of the Ministry of Industry Promotion (Mr. Manu Leopairote), the Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Export Promotion (Ms. Chantra Purnariksha), representatives of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (Mr. Komson Opaseathavorn, Ms. Chantra Purnariksha) and the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (Mr. Komson Opaseathavorn). Komson Opaseathavorn, Pornsit Sriorathaikul, and Pichait Palanugool) and the Dean of the Faculty of Science at Chulalongkorn University (Prof. Sakda Siripant) met to discuss the establishment of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Institute. They concluded that both ministries were in favor of establishing the institute in collaboration with the Faculty of Science at Chulalongkorn University, with regard to facilities and staff. The meeting tasked the Ministry of Commerce with taking the lead in drafting a proposal for the establishment of the institute for the Cabinet’s consideration. At its meeting on September 8, 1998, the Cabinet decided to approve the establishment of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Institute as an independent organization whose management is not bound by the rules and regulations of the bureaucracy and state-owned enterprises. It was also decided that the Public Organizations Act would apply even after it came into force.

Subsequently, on September 9, 1998, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce (Mr. Sompol Kiatphaibool), as Chairman of the Institute’s Board of Directors, together with the Director-General of the Export Promotion Department (Mr. Sanit Vorapanya), the President of Chulalongkorn University (Prof. Dr. Thienchay Kiranandana), the Dean of the Faculty of Science (Prof. Sakda Siripant), the President (Mr. Komson Opaseathavorn), and the Vice President (Mr. Pichait Palanugool) of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Trade Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. Pichait Palanugool) from the Thai Gem and Jewelry Trade Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center regarding a research and development project in the gem and jewelry industry, with the aim of expanding technical knowledge and developing and promoting exports in the gem and jewelry industry. The Faculty of Science at Chulalongkorn University granted the institute permission to use the building for research and testing of gemstones and jewelry, as well as the faculty’s equipment, for a period of 10 years (from September 9, 1998, to September 9, 2008). The faculty also authorized its staff to collaborate on research and testing of gemstones and jewelry. On October 1, 1998, the institute’s board of directors, composed of 28 representatives from the public and private sectors, appointed Professor Sakdu Siripant as director of the institute and Mr. Sompol Kiatphaibool as chairman of the board.
